Self Defense for Teens
Our children are growing in an increasingly violent world that transcends economic lines. Gone are the days where "safe" neighborhoods are immune to violence. According to the United States Department of Justice, violent offenders are becoming increasingly younger. That means the chances your teenager will be faced with a violent situation are rapidly increasing.
It is no surprise that teens are particularly vulnerable because of their rebellious nature, increased drive toward independence and the perception of invulnerability. Combine that with bullying, drugs and crime in the schools have placed your child in a heightened state of vulnerability.
Youth violence includes various behaviors. Some violent acts-such as bullying: verbal abuse, slapping, or hitting-can cause more emotional harm than physical harm. Others, such as robbery, assault, or rape, can lead to serious injury or even death. In a recent study, approximately 16 people age 10-24 are murdered every day*.
While local law enforcement, teachers and school administrators work diligently to prevent and respond swiftly and accurately to violence, they are not omnipresent. Your child needs a basic primary skill set to detect danger and a specific course of action to avoid, escape, survive and communicate.
