Self Defense is self preservation. Studying a martial art or a martial sport, like mixed martial arts, are about over coming obstacles, training and competition. They are only symbolic of what happens in a real self defense situation. Self Defense is simple. True self defense technique must be instinctive and convulsive. Self Defense can not be complicated. Self defense is about implementing a plan and strategy.Self defense in the beginning should be about creating avenues of escape and evasion, training yourself to put as much distance between you and your assailant as possible. This is simple and easy compared with trying to conquer your enemy (as most self defense systems teach). You have to identify the threat and create space. There is no criminal in the world who can control you from a distance.Self Defense is about protecting your personal space and escape and survival and you don't need a martial art to do this. Learning how to escape is survive is easy compare to moving forward an conquering your enemy, which takes a lot more training and attitude. Not every one will want to study a martial art, but everyone has a need for self defense.
