The Self Defense Company
12 Point Standards Of Martial Arts and Self Defense Instruction
From mixed martial arts, Tae Kwon Do, Karate and Kung Fu to Brazilian Jujitsu and Krav Maga, it’s almost impossible to decide what style of martial art will fit your needs. It seems like every where you turn there’s a new system, style or sport popping up. It tends to be a little confusing.
When it comes to choosing the right martial art and martial arts school all you have to do is a little research. The first thing you must remember is that martial arts cannot be all things to all people. You need a specific tool for a specific job. Most martial arts have their place
in the world, it’s up to the martial arts instructor to best educate potential students about what they offer and
it’s up to the student to make and educated decision.
The best way find out if a martial art is right for you is to take advantage of an intro program. This will give you an excellent idea of what to expect from your martial arts study.

A personal message from Director of The Self Defense Training Center,
Damian Ross
Dear Friend,
Thank you for taking the time to visit our online dojo. I hope you find it informative and helpful. Deciding where to spend your free time, energy and resources is a big decision and not to be taken likely. Time is something we can never get back. These days , it seems we have less and less of it. It is our mission to make the most out of your time. To do that we need a high level of instruction and a certain level of student.
The Self Defense Training Center student isn't a super soldier or athlete. They are ordinary people who want something more out of their time. They look to meet challenges in a friendly and supportive environment. In the dojo, everyone participates to the best of their ability, no one sits on the bench.
From our intro self defense courses and work shops to our elite martial arts programs, I know that we will meet and exceed your expectations. In fact, I am so confident that you can experience all we have to offer in our Unlimited Intro Program for the cost of a uniform. But you have to call us first.
Thank you for your time and I hope to see you at the center,
Damian Ross

A Brief History Martial Arts and Self Defense in the Wayne, Oakland, Franklin Lakes, Ringwood, Bloomingdale, Pompton and Wanaque area.
Many martial arts and self defense systems found their way to the Bergen County and Passaic County areas. The typical martial arts and martial arts schools were sport oriented. The first types of martial arts in the Wayne, Oakland, Franklin Lakes, Ringwood, Bloomingdale, Pompton and Wanaque area were karate, tae kwon do and judo. Originally, most martial arts programs were derived from military combatives; the study of hand-to-hand combat and martial arts in warfare. After all, the term "martial art" means "art of warfare." For example, the sport of judo comes from jujutsu, which comes from samurai grappling, which was part of the training Japanese warriors received as preparation for battle.
Many weapon-oriented martial arts, such as iado, kendo, kyudo and naganata-do originated in schools of martial techniques for warriors. These weapons, the sword, bow and arrow, and pole arm, were the assault rifles and machine guns of their time--the default weapons of military fighters--and as such were key components in combat training.
The Western interest in East Asian Martial arts dates back to the late 19th Century AD, due to the increase in trade between America with China and Japan. Relatively few Westerners actually practiced the martial arts, considering it to be mere performance.
Edward William Barton-Wright, a railway engineer who had studied the martial art Jujutsu while working in Japan between 1894-97, was the first man known to have taught Asian martial arts in Europe. He also founded an eclectic martial arts style named Bartitsu which combined jujutsu, judo, boxing, savate and stick fighting.
William E. Fairbairn, a Shanghai policeman and at the time a leading Western expert on Asian fighting techniques, was recruited during world War II by the Special Operations Executive (SOE) to teach UK, U.S. and Canadian Commando and Ranger forces Jujutsu.
The seminal self-defense book Kill or Get Killed was written by Colonel Rex Applegate, who worked closely with Fairbairn to train the "First Special Service," a joint U.S. and Canadian army unit; it became a classic military treatise on hand to hand combat and created the reality based martial art "Defendu." Modern variations that can still trace an authentic lineage to Applegate are very few.
Seeing the need to bring these legitimate and proven techniques and method of close-combat back into the Modern world of "hobby" Martial Arts (Karate, Kung Fu, Capoiera, Aikido, etc.) and "sport" Martial Arts (Judo, Brazilian Jui-jitsu, Wrestling, Kick Boxing, Mixed Martial Arts, Ultimate fighting , etc.), Yoshisada Yonezuka, Damian Ross, Roger Jones and Peter Barry have dedicated their lives to teaching, instruction, and spreading the "truth" about Martial Arts, street fighting, self defense, and close combat.
This site is the only link to that legacy
Today you will find mixed martial arts being added to tae kwon do, karate and Brazilian jujitsu curriculums. Most martial arts schools in the area have some form of grappling and striking to their programs. However there are few that are effective for self defense. Most martial arts schools teach combat sport or cultural martial arts. If you are looking for a martial arts school in the Bergen county, Passaic county, Wayne, Oakland, Franklin Lakes, Ringwood, Bloomingdale, Pompton and Wanaque New Jersey area, it’s important to do some research and find the martial arts and self defense school that’s right for you and your children.
Please be aware of the following common misspellings as relates to common martial art and self defense searches: martial atrs, martial atrs weapons, martial arts spuplies, martial arts eqiupment, martail, marital arts uniforms, amrtial arts supply, amrtial arts books amrtial arts. “Pharmaceutical Vice President Becomes more Self-Aware and Self-Confident”
After three years of study I can’t believe the level of self-confidence and how alert I’ve become. In fact, if it wasn’t for my training, I wouldn’t have been able to survive some real life situations. Between the great workouts, positive encouragement from the Instructors and the knowledge I have gained, I know I can protect myself against a physical attack. After three years of training, I still look forward to coming back again and again. In the beginning, I procrastinated, but now I can’t picture my life without The Self Defense Training Center. - Susanne B., Pharmaceutical VP, Wayne, NJ

“I never have to persuade Jacob to go to class.”
“Every day, he is dressed and ready to go. In only a few short months, his energy level has increased dramatically. So much in fact, his soccer even coaches noticed! We are excited to be a part of The Self Defense Training Center Family and when I see my child get this excited and happy about something that is good for him, it’s one less thing I need to worry about.” - Marietta and her son Jacob (Age 7)

“No More Medication, after 25 years, Local Businessman Lowers Cholesterol and Finds the Fountain of Youth”
Its great to be a part of The Self Defense Training Center. Not only do you get a great work out, you get practical knowledge of the martial arts as well. Even though the workouts are demanding, the instructors really know how to motivate you and keep it fun and interesting. The individual attention you get from the instructors is fantastic, everyone, even the other members, is always willing to help you do better. You know, I haven’t worked out in over 25 years, and only after a few months I’ve lost weight and I feel better than I have in years. With regular workouts and a diet plan from Sensei Ross, the results have been incredible. But I have to say the most remarkable result so far is what happened to my cholesterol. I’ve been taking Lipitor for over 5 years and after my last check up, my triglycerides came down from the 200 plus level to below 100!!!!
It’s funny; my wife can’t even believe it happened so fast. Hey, if this is 3 months, imagine what will happen in three years. Oh, and I almost forgot, my Doctor has taken me off Lipitor completely!! - Dave R., Canine Management Solutions Provider Pompton Lakes, NJ Time in training: 3 months
Truth be told...You Don’t Need a Black Belt to Protect Yourself!
“Students Discover How to Fight Back Against Campus Violence” Spring 2006 - The 10 Lesson Self Defense Course given by The Self Defense Training Center, gave BCC students a realistic, viable solution to a seriously violent and grave situation. According to Damian Ross, instructor, “Students were taught to develop a plan. Whether in their home or on the road, students learned how to prepare themselves for an assault. They also discovered how to ensure their greatest percentage of survivability and escape. Listen, you’re not going to be a lethal weapon in a handful of lessons, but you will become a tougher target.“It’s a lot of common sense stuff. It’s all about training
themselves to develop some habits that will save their lives. Once they start thinking that way they can handle any situation. Instead of focusing on situation-specific defense scenarios, the students are given a protocol to follow and they are trained to follow this protocol under stress.” - Roger Jones, Instructor Course Instructor Roger Jones teaches BCC Student how to hit with power.
